General Session - Active Shooter Training for the Workplace; Awareness, Preparation, Rehearsal 

In this session, SPO Newman will talk through lessons learned from previous active shooting situations.  The session will describe characteristics of an active shooter to watch for and describe their mentality.  Specific steps to be taken if an active shooter presents in the workplace will be reviewed and suggestions for internal training and preparedness for a hostile situation will be shared.  In this training the various scenarios will be reviewed along with the dos and don’ts for each scenario.  There will be a review of information to provide to emergency personnel, and what to expect when the police respond.  

Session Objectives:

  • The participant will articulate the definition of an active shooter
  • The participant will list measures that can be employed to reduce the effectiveness of an active shooter
  • The participant will describe actions that can be expected from responding law enforcement officers.

SPO Newman has been a police officer for 28 years.  He currently serves as the Des Moines Metro Special Tactics and Response Training Coordinator.  He is the SWAT Team Training Coordinator for Active Shooter Education, for the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and Des Moines Regional Academy.
