ACMPE Certification FAQS

What is ACMPE Board certification?
ACMPE certification is designed to verify and validate expertise and experience in medical practice management in the eight domains of the Body of Knowledge for Medical Practice Management. To begin the certification process, you are required to have two years of ambulatory or other healthcare management experience that includes at least six months as a direct supervisor of people in a healthcare delivery system, as well as significant functional responsibility in at least one of the eight domains in the Body of Knowledge.

Established in 1956, the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE) is the standard-setting and certification division of MGMA-ACMPE, the oldest and largest member organizations representing medical group practices. Earning the Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE) credential validates and verifies your expertise and experience in medical practice management. The certification process is based on the Body of Knowledge for Medical Practice Management, which reflects the knowledge and skills necessary for success in this fast-paced field.

How do you get started?
To apply for ACMPE Board certification and to work toward the designation of CMPE, you must:

  • Be a current member of national MGMA-ACMPE.
  • Pay a one-time $250 ACMPE board certification application fee.
  • Submit your completed application form demonstrating the eligibility requirements of two years health care management experience, including at least six months in a supervisory role.
  • Once your application fee and application form are received and your prerequisites verified, you will be contacted by e-mail within 10 business days to confirm your acceptance in the program as a nominee.
  • If it is determined that you do not meet the prerequisite eligibility requirements, you will be refunded your ACMPE Board certification application fee less a $25 processing fee.


How do I go about tracking my CEU’s?
ACMPE provides an online transcript for ACMPE members to personally update and manage to keep an accurate account of your continuing education hours. ACMPE recommends that you keep documentation of your continuing education entries for your own records in case of an audit. What is the date limit on submitting current CEU’s?
ACMPE policy is that you can enter any hours that are no more than 30 days prior to your ACMPE join date and forward.

Are there any excluded associations for obtaining CEU’s?

How many CEU’s are required annually?
As a Nominee of ACMPE, you will be required to have 50 continuing education hours on your transcript and pass the objective and essay exams to be board certified. Once you have achieved board certification through ACMPE you will become a Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE). As a Certified Member, you are required to have 50 continuing education hours every three years to maintain your CMPE designation.

Can I use CEU’s obtained prior to certification towards CEU’s needed after certification? If so, what are the requirements?
Continuing education hours are only eligible during the timeframe that they are acquired. For instance, the current continuing education requirement timeframe is January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2014. Any continuing education that you attend during that time is eligible during that time.

When are the testing dates and locations?
Objective and essay exams are offered once each year via paper and pencil at the MGMA Annual Conference and three times each year via computer at many locations across the United States. Computerized exams are provided through a network of more than 200 exam centers managed by Castle Worldwide. Other than submitting my resume and taking the CMPE exam, are there any other requirements for becoming certified?
Once you have submitted your verification of two years in healthcare management you are eligible to take the exams. The requirements to achieved ACMPE board certification as two years experience in healthcare management, 50 continuing education hours on your transcript and passing the objective and essay exams.

What are the requirements for obtaining Fellowship?
